Manchester used car dealers and other dealers have certainly been selling well over the past year, but there is no guarantee that the trend will continue. However, the UAW is demanding that automakers start to give employees more for their work during the current positive trend of the automotive industry. King was elected president of the UAW in June succeeding Ron Gettelfinger who helped persuade President Obama to bail out GM and Chrysler as both companies went bankrupt last year.
Membership in the UAW at one point in 1979 was at a high of 1.5 million but it has dropped to only 355,000. The contract of the UAW with GM, Chrysler, and Ford ends next year. King said that UAW workers have already made concessions of $7,000 to $30,o00 in past years. One concession was a two tier wage system in which new hires earned $14.00 which is about half of what hourly production workers are paid. King also said that the U.S. government should offer more economic stimuli that would help to put Americans back to work, although it is arguable that the bailouts of 2009 potentially saved thousands of jobs at Chrysler and GM.
